  • Good, but fix the bugs

A good app with lots of features and blazingly fast compared with the android version. But they have a problem with introducing bugs and not fixing them. For example there is a problem with vector rendering. The causes the Gaia topo to not render trails completely at certain zoom levels. I been burned by this and reported it multiple times and they say they are working on it. But years later it’s still broken.

I think this is the best app on the market for GPS coordinates. It's accurate and reliable. I have used this app for several years now, and I trust it with my life. I feel super comfortable when I'm out in the woods. Please be responsible and make sure you're still aware of you're soundings. This app wouldn't save you if you didn't pack enough water or proper clothes for your adventure.
  • Useless in rain and/or with wet hands

Maybe not surprisingly, but the touch screen on an iPhone becomes unusable when wet. Raindrops are enough to affect the touch screen. Good luck trying interface with GAIA GPS when wet.

GAIA has a great selection of map overlays, it shows your pace, keeps track of your route, it saves way points and photos.

I didn’t expect the detailed trail layout in this app in the deep mountains in S. S.Korea and also the streets and highways to aid in navigation. Many thanks!
  • Great for the outdoors types

A little difficult to use, there is definitely a learning curve. However, it’s a great app with loads of features.
  • So much potential, so many bugs

First and foremost, believe them when they they make you agree that you cannot trust their maps. I’m thinking particular of the private and public property layers. Too often when I tap on a location, Gaia tells me it is both public and private. When I reported this and gave examples, the response I got was quick, friendly, and useless: this is a known problem and we don’t know when or if we’ll fix it.

One of the reasons to use this app is its integration with CarPlay. But that is buggy. Too often, it displays nothing except a shadow contour. There’s a workaround for that, but it involves pulling over, bringing up Gaia on your phone, and changing the orders of the map layers. They’ve known about this for years and haven’t fixed it.
Another promise is synchronization between multiple devices that use the same account. But this is buggy too. For example, you can attach a note to a track, but these are not reliably synced. (So, keep them somewhere else.)

Tracks and waypoints usually appear as they should but not always. Sometimes changing where the map is centered works. Sometimes, killing and restarting the app will make them appear.

Saved tracks sometimes show a show monochrome block as a thumbnail.
You get the idea. It mostly works and when it does, it’s excellent.

Finally, accessing it via a browser is slow, slow. And it causes the browser to use a prodigious amount of CPU time when it is apparently idle.
