  • My favorite map app

I’ve tried many different types of app for hiking. I like to get off of the trail and rarely have service when I’m in these areas. The downloaded maps are easy to save and work great. The transition is sometimes so smooth I’ll check to see if I actually have service. I highly recommend this app 👍👍
  • Great backcountry app but NEEDS an Apple Watch app

Love this app, I’ve used all the others (Gaia, AllTrails, Caltopo etc.) and love OnX. The map layers are great and detailed. The 3D map is cool although currently limited in terms of which trails support 3D but I’m sure will increase over time. The desktop and iPad apps make it really easy to plan out a trip and then easily transfer and pull it up on the phone app. The trail difficulty overlay right on the trail is amazing so I know exactly what my elevation gain looks like while on trail.

Only feedback is we NEED an Apple Watch app, the other major players have one and it’s a really useful thing to have so I don’t have to always take my phone out. To have the ability to see offline maps or tracks on the watch would be great, especially with the new watch Ultra and it’s nice size screen!

Overall great app for being in the backcountry!
  • Directions to Trail Head

This app is already far better than any of the other trail apps! Unless I’m missing something, the only thing that seems to be missing is the ability to get directions (or link to Maps/Google Maps) to the trailhead from your current location.
  • Shows promise, but not currently viable for me

This app is easier to use and much more intuitive than Gaia, and the map design is way better, but the lack of critical route building tools means it isn’t viable for me. There are a ton of apps that let me click on a trail and get the distance and elevation change. If I’m going to pay for a GPS app I’ll need route building functionality that works with real trail vectors—not just point-and-click lines. I’ll check back in next year but the current offering isn’t enough.

  • Amazing maps and features

I mountain bike, hike, XC ski, and snowshoe. onX has the best set of features yet. Full sync between iPhone and iPad, wildfire history, waypoints, tracks, up to date satellite images.

Wow - makes my trip planning and tracking much better.
  • Downloading Maps Won’t Work

This is the second year I’ve purchased the upgraded version and have been unable to download the maps getting stuck with the “free version”. OnX Hunt has worked well for me, but Backcountry has let me down twice. Complete let down.

I use this app on my iPhone and also my iPad to do some initial planning. The app is very good, but the lack of features on the 3d mode is somewhat annoying, and for the love of the almighty please let the iPad app rotate into landscape mode.

Aspect and slope angle are really nice features to use.
  • Easily visible trails near me

Some apps I have found that you really have to pinch into the map to find the trails. In my area I seem to be having better luck with OnX. Haven’t used super long yet but so far I like it.
