A short concise path to the whys and wherefores of meditation. Simple, easy, deeply educational for a beginner — likely a helpful reminder for folks who are experienced in meditation. I’d highly recommend it. The offerings are without cost for the beginnings . A lot to gain here.

I can count on one hand the number of subscriptions apps I have on my phone. And I’d probably give up all the others before I would unsubscribe from this one. I’ve been using this app almost daily for the past 16 months. Prior to installing the app, I’d been flirting with trying to get started with mindfulness meditation. I wasn’t ready to start putting out a lot of money to find a one-on-one instructor or take group classes. And in the very beginning, I just didn’t really know how to get started in any meaningful way. So I took a chance on this app. Now, about the app itself, there seems to be three kinds of tools here: relatively short topical instructional meditation courses, one off guided meditations, and informational podcasts. With a paid subscription you get access to everything. (Update: since I wrote the original review 10% Happier has recently added two additional pay features for 1 on 1 coaching and group classes via Zoom.) The instructional meditation courses have two parts. The first part is a short (< 5 min.) video or just audio in which an instructor and quite frequently Dan Harris have a discussion about the meditation topic at hand. And then it is followed by a guided meditation. Most all of those courses seem to last 1 to 2 weeks. The one off, or single meditations usually have someone talking for a few minutes and then leading a meditation. What I really like about some of these is that they also let you choose the length of the meditation, usually from 5 to 15 minutes in increments of 5 minutes. Some have options that will go as long as an hour. Lastly, the informational podcasts are like typical podcasts, some lasting an hour or more. There are podcasts designed for people who are interested in lots aspects of mindfulness meditation. All of the tools in the app are added to frequently and some focus (loosely) of current events or times of the year. For example, if you find the holidays to be stressful, there seems to be new material that becomes available to help with that. The content of the materials is nothing short of excellent. If you’re an absolute beginner (I was and probably still am), there are courses to help you get started. They take into account that you’re a beginner not only in assuming you already know something about the material presented, but are also reassuring that if you don’t feel like you’re “doing it right”. They provide the reassurance that it isn’t so much the “how” you’re doing it, as much as they consistent application of the principles and coming back to the meditation when your mind wanders off (and it will). The meditations reinforce each other and they don’t expect you’ll get everything the first time. Also, I need to mention that they use lots of different instructors, many of who are among the most well known. Having different instructors helps you learn there isn’t just one way. And the different personalities all have something to offer. You’ll probably find your own favorites. The instructors come off mostly as every day people who have a lot of experience with this type of meditation. There aren’t any special robes or incense here. Not that there’s anything wrong with that for people drawn to it. This app is for the average person who is trying to navigate this world in a thoughtful way while trying not to get sucked into the drama and not be a jerk to themselves or others. These meditations aren’t just for beginners. There are many I haven’t attempted yet. There are a number of courses I have repeated months later. As my practice is developing, I find I get things from repeated meditations that either I didn’t catch or probably interpreted differently the last time I heard it. This one app has made mindfulness meditation within my reach. I’m a 64 year old man who didn’t start this until I was 62. I have found that the application of mindfulness meditation has truly led me to deeper understanding of myself and my motivations so that I can move towards being more the person I want to be. Personally, I can tell my relationships with other people are better. My attitude and responses towards the good and bad things that happen in my life are healthier for me (and probably the people around me). And as a disclaimer, this isn’t therapy. It won’t take the place of a therapist. But if you want a deeper understanding of yourself, how the person you are affects others, and a path to navigate through life without the drama, mindfulness meditation may well help provide the path to help you on that journey. The key to success is persistence and I find the app makes that persistence so much easier than trying to make a go of it on my own.

Ten percent is THE app if you are looking to find self-growth and a more sense of calm for your life. With only $100 you could have full access to 250+meditations and podcast, all of which are super useful and helpful for the beginner to seasoned veteran mediator. I truly wouldn’t be as calm, focused and more in love with myself and body if not for this app! Though, I must say this and it is the reason for the two stars. The amount of freezing, restarting, and slow load times are killer 💀. I haven’t even downloaded any mediations but when I leave the app and it’s running either a mediation or podcast is going you have a 70% chance of it stopping the listen and forcing you to go back in the app and restart the whole thing again. Which haha I think is a mediation in itself. Though, tbh if I’m paying $100/yr, which is very cheap with the amount of teachers that are on the app. I still want a functioning app that has a smooth A.I. system. Pls Dan, love you and respect all that you went through and the courage that you displayed to put out this resource. But fix the A. I., so I can turn my mediation up to a 10 😁 I run an iPhone 12 Pro, haven’t had any other issues with other apps. *EDIT* After reading the other negative reviews. I think it’s only fair I state a little more. I only reviewed this cuz I was getting frustrated with the updates that were coming and still the app was crashing. I will change my star rating once you fix it. Must say that there seems to be people complaint about price. Without a doubt 100$ for this mediation app is a steal of a deal !! People don’t understand that even though mediation is free and you can do it whenever and don’t need any guidance. If you truly want to deepen your relationship with yourself, having a guide is crucial if you don’t want to just plateau. Just like how school teachers aren’t paid enough. Anyone who teaches on this app, fsfs isn’t getting paid enough for the amount of change they are bringing the individual. Go, Ten Percent! Pls fix crashing and 5 stars instantly 🤩
Ten percent happier offers lessons from the foremost teachers in mindfulness in the most accessible, easy to digest format possible. My practice is much more consistent since I signed up.
